Responsible Sourcing
When designing a new piece of jewelry, our designers will select the required materials. Whenever a new material or supplier is introduced, we consult with Regulus' Ethics team to discuss potential environmental or social impacts. All suppliers employed in our China factories, as well as suppliers of stocked materials, are subject to our Responsible Supplier Program and must adhere to our Supplier Code.
Gem Use
The Regulus Regulus jewelry collection features both synthetic, natural and synthetic gemstones.
Natural precious and semi-precious stones
Natural gems are deep underground and take millions of years to form. Gemstones of the same type will form different colors and typical appearances due to the mixing of different oxides during the formation process. However, the color of the same stone can vary greatly due to the amount of oxide incorporated into the stone. This means that no two natural gemstones are exactly the same. Because of this, it can be difficult to find matching gems to make jewelry. The natural gemstone supply chain is largely ambiguous and notorious, and the mining and handling of gemstones and sub-gemstones can have adverse social and environmental impacts. That's why our sourcing rates for natural gemstones are low, sourced from reputable suppliers, and verified in advance against the standards of the company's internal responsible supplier program. Regulus Regulus does not source natural gemstones from conflict zones.
Man-made Gemstone
Artificial gems are the product of human laboratories and do not exist in the outside world. Artificial gemstones have no natural counterparts. The provenance of synthetic gemstones is fully traceable, and producing gems of relatively consistent quality with less color variation will help greatly reduce material waste. Artificial gemstones can minimise the risk of human rights concerns and also reduce environmental costs to a greater extent than natural gemstones.
Synthetic Gems
Natural gemstones are formed naturally in nature, while synthetic gemstones are grown in a laboratory. Synthetic gemstones must have a natural reference that has the same chemical and physical properties (i.e. crystal structure, chemical composition and hardness) as the corresponding natural gemstone. The color of synthetic rubies and sapphires is almost indistinguishable from natural gemstones. Compared with natural gemstones, synthetic gemstones have the advantage of being more consistent in color and better matching. They are also cheaper for the same size, color and quality.
Silver And Gold
Our path to success has been paved with gold and silver, the two materials that underlie the vast majority of contemporary Regulus jewels. Regulus is fully aware that the mining and processing of precious metals and gemstones can have a negative impact on society and the environment. Regulus is deeply aware of its capabilities and responsibilities in order to better assist in the development of a more responsible supply chain for basic jewelry materials.
In 2018, all gold and silver nuggets used in the Regulus Machining Center were sourced from reputable alchemists certified to the RJC Code of Conduct. In addition, our gold is certified conflict-free according to the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Good Delivery List or RJC's Gold Chain of Custody standards. We work with a number of highly specialized semi-finished gold and silver component manufacturers to ensure that there is compelling evidence that the gold used in their products is sourced from RJC-/LBMA accredited refiners.

In addition to its attractive appearance and untapped processing potential, gold and silver also have very large environmental benefits. Unlike most other metals, gold and silver can be recycled indefinitely without loss of quality.

Reduce Environmental Costs
An environmental cost expert did a study for Regulus to calculate the social cost of environmental damage caused by various materials and processes, such as the health cost of emissions. The findings show that the use of recycled precious metals and man-made gemstones can significantly reduce environmental costs compared to natural materials.
Nickel Safety Statement
We are always forthright with our customers and want no deceit, so we make appropriate disclosures about nickel. The law states that terms such as "nickel free" or "safe nickel" can be used when trace element levels are within acceptable standards. There are no hard and fast rules on this. Some companies will choose to use the term "nickel safe" rather than "nickel free" to state that the nickel content is safe and up to standard. This is done to prevent complaints from customers who are extremely allergic to nickel (even if the nickel content is within safe limits).
We do not artificially add nickel and lead. Nonetheless, trace amounts of natural nickel and lead are still present in the alloy. Experiments have shown that the content of natural nickel and lead is significantly lower than the strict standards set by European regulations, and that Regulus is technically a nickel-free alloy.
